Competences
Students will gain knowledge in the areas of applications in various manufacturing concepts, in the engineering of flexible and reconfigurable production and automation systems. Additionally, they will become acquainted with innovative digitalization and networking approaches and engineering methods for industrial eco-systems based on Industry 4.0 approaches (e.g. the Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0 – DIN SPEC 91345) and the Industrial Internet-of-Things Reference-Architecture (IIoT)).
The course brings together diverse disciplines in a comprehensive manner, enabling students to develop a meaningful understanding of the complex associations and influences within a topic, thus project-based learning is an essential element.
Contents
This module follows an integrated study approach; therefore the students use and extend their knowledge in the areas:
- Production- and Automation-systems. From the 1st to the 3rd Industrial Revolutions.

This course introduces the usage of SAP S/4HANA from a User perspective. Next to using the standard SAP University Alliance curriculum, we will use Serious Business games to learn the exemplary cash-to-cash process of a production company using ERPsim (https://erpsim.hec.ca/en). The ERPsim games run on a SAP S4HANA platform.
It is expected that students know controlling basics and finance fundamentals. If not, you have to acquire the necessary knowledge throughout the semester.
In SS 2024, there will be the possibility to work with 2 Teams of the University of Applied Sciences in Kiel. The class's best team will participate in the International ERPsim Challenge.
In addition, 2nd-semester students must have passed Scientific Working, and 1st-semester students must be enrolled in the current Scientific Working course (Prof. Ottink) and pass the citation test. The taught content, specifically regarding scientific posters/reports, also applies to the poster in ERP-Systems.
The physical presence of students is mandatory.
Case studies/exercises must be finished by the following week, and any mistakes must be corrected the week after. Correctly finished case studies are a prerequisite for the exam.
Lectures are on Wednesdays, with two to three additional dates on Fridays. The Wednesday lectures are coordinated with the lectures Digitalization and ‘Automation by Prof. Colombo.
We’ll start on Wednesday, 20.03.2024, at 8:00 and go until 13:15.
Participation is limited to 24 students in SS 2024. First come, first serve.
